Fire Baked Salmon

Throughout the day, Clarice Paul (Wanapum), Lightening Paul Sr. (Yakama), and Kenneth Mathias (Wanapam) will be fire baking salmon with traditional cooking sticks.  You’ll be able to watch and ask questions along the way.

Chief Wilbur Slockish is a respected leader from the Klickitat Band of the Yakama Nation. Born in 1944 on the Yakama Reservation in Wapato, Washington, he grew up fishing at Celilo Falls on the Columbia River. Alongside David Sohappy and others, he was once arrested for fishing and selling fish in protest, a case called the “Salmon Scam” which was pivitol to advocating for treaty fishing rights. He is currently a commissioner on the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, working to safeguard salmon, rivers, and tribal fishing rights.
